10 Tips for Dealing with Depression – by Cassendre Xavier (Part 1 of 2)

February 29, 2012 – “renaissance negresse” Cassendre Xavier (musician, author, actress, fine artist) discusses her lifelong experiences with, and shares her experiences with managing, severe depression. Since 1991, Cassendre has used her various creative and healing arts to deal with depression, from songwriting (background song is “Happy to Be Alive” from her first of several musical recordings “The Whittenberg Sessions”) to playwriting and acting (Sex for Survivors – Philly Fringe Festival 2003) to creating and facillitating support groups (including Sisters Healing Together: A Peer Support Group for Women Survivors of Incest with a Special Focus on Compulsive Overeating, 1996 – 1999 at the William Way LGBT Community Center in Philadelphia) and spoken word guided meditations (“Affirmations for Survivors” series: Self-Love, Spirituality, both released in 2007 and the forthcoming Sexuality, and Life Skills, all by Amethyste Rah – CX’s spiritual pseudonym – with music of light by Thaddeus).

The Ten Tips for Dealing with Depression, as personally experienced by Cassendre are:

1) Doing whatever it takes to avoid suicide. For example, not committing suicide in order to avoid going to hell, as she was taught in church (and no longer believes).
2) Various forms of creative arts.
3) Bibliotherapy.
4) Looking forward to the good parts of life.
5) Diet (raw/vegan/live foods) & nutrition
6) Exercise.
7) Specific encouraging thoughts, such as “This too shall pass” and “Everything’s going to be okay,” etc. Other thoughts include “I blame no one for the circumstances of my life,” and “I chose and continue to choose every aspect of my life.”
8) Spiritual and inspiring personal growth audio/books and guided meditations.
9) Service/loving others when depressed; actively going out and trying to inspire others.
10) Gratitude, practiced regularly and often.

    First you just get prettier everyday…thanks for these wonderful tips and comments…I have dealt with depression all my life. I used to be very suicidal…most people never knew..I was always known as the uplifting spiritual guy..but many didn't know that dark spooky side of me…No one knew that every single day I thought about ending it all…Now I spend most of my time helping people to live positively inspired lives…Darien Marshall…big kiss to you
