Yoga is a form of exercise which covers both mental and physical faculties. It is gaining popularity all over the world. In fact, yoga is even used to treat asthma. Yes, yoga is one of the alternative therapies found to effectively manage asthma.
Asthma is a disease characterized by inflammation of the air passages. People with asthma experience coughing, shortness of breath, breathing difficulty, and wheezing during an attack. Certain anti-asthma drugs are prescribed to treat the disease.
But alternative therapies are famous among asthma sufferers because these can effectively reduce the amount of drugs that they need as well as the number of times an asthma attack occurs. Because of this, the link between asthma and yoga was established.
Asthma and yoga were seen to have a link because yoga is all about relaxation, proper breathing, and meditation. And people suffering an asthma attack can very well benefit from yoga because of what the latter teaches. Furthermore, Pranayama is practiced in yoga. These are breathing exercises established to effectively treat asthma. Pranayama breathing exercises are another link between asthma and yoga. In these exercises, there are three phases known as puraka or inhalation, kumbhaka or retention, and rechaka or inhalation. Inhalation brings fresh air into the lungs. Retention increases internal temperature and oxygen absorption. Exhalation brings the diaphragm back to its original position and air that is filled with impurities and toxins is expelled.
When performing the Pranayama breathing exercises, the spine must always be straight and relaxed; breathings must always be slow and steady; and the mind must not be pro-occupied with other thoughts.
Now, asthma and yoga can go together in the sense that a person with asthma can still do yoga. What are the different Pranayama breathing exercises that can treat asthma?
Dirga pranayama encourages deep, slow breathing patterns. This breathing exercise is great for all types of asthma. Naadi Shodhana is great for asthma and stress which are triggered by emotional problems. If the asthma trigger is cold air, the best Pranayama breathing exercise is Ujjayi pranayama. Here, the person is taught to breathe through his or her nose while the throat is tightened. This is described as the feeling of "sipping air through a straw." For allergic asthma, Sit Cari or Shitali pranayama is the best breathing exercise. Kapalabhati pranayama strengthens the lungs and reduces mucus congestion. In Kapalabhati pranayama, the asthma sufferer is taught to exhale forcefully while the abdominal muscles are contracted.
Although yoga has been established to effectively treat asthma, the use of anti-asthma medications must not be discontinued unless recommended by the doctor. Yoga is used in conjunction with anti-asthma medications to effectively manage the disease.
