I have to say that these ads are probably the main reason that I just recently quit smoking. I was a pack a day smoker for about 12 years, first starting at age 19 in the Marines. I hated these ads because they scared me, because I knew that they could be true for any smoker. But I clung to the idea that NOT EVERY smoker would be susceptible (hell, millions of people smoke and live until age 90). The reality? I decided that I no longer wanted to take the risks.

Terri's ads in particular really stuck to me. Tell a smoker that they increase their risks of premature death, and they probably won't be that concerned. Tell them that they could lose their larynx, colon, etc, they're more likely to listen. Sad to say, but true.

My dad smokes and we're helping him stop. We bought him a vape and he's smoking less than he was. Hopefully by February, he will be done. Vape helped my brother. <3

Q: What did the U.S. Surgeon General warn the public about in May of 1984?

A: That non-smokers can suffer lung damage from being exposed to other people's cigarette smoke. For two decades, cancer and other lung diseases had been connected with cigarette smoking. In 1984, a government report on the health risks of smoking warned non-smokers as well. In time, that report led to many changes. Today, for instance, smoking is banned in many public places throughout the U.S.

In a way I do feel sorry for these people. But I also in away don't feel sorry for them. because they should have realized what will happen. Before they started their smoking addiction. I know what smoking can do to you. Since I come from a family of smokers. I happen to lost quite a few members of my family. To their smoking addiction. My one grandfather for many, many years had smoke both cigars and pipes. But it didn't took to seeing his cousin. Laying on a hospital bed hook up to an oxygen tent. To make him quite. I almost lost my mother as well. Since she was a smoker as well. Started when she was 14. But she quite when she started to have breathing problems. When she was in her 30s. That finally made her listen. When she wouldn't listen to me or my brother. When we were always constantly on her to quite smoking. And this was going back to the 80s. I remember back in 1986 my mother letting me try her cigerette once when I was 6 years old. I had pester her if I could try that. Let me tell you it really is the most disgusting thing you can do to yourself. That one puff was like puffing on a chimney. 35 years old now and I have been smoke free ever since. Where my older brother has always been smoke free. He absolutely hate smokers. And he made his wife quite smoking. Cause there was no way he was going to tolerate her smoking. And being force to breathe in second hand smoke. Just like him I also hate smokers.

What makes me sad is that my grandmother has the same name (differently spelled, though)… and she smokes. She tries to quit, and believe it or not, she has no cancer or whatever.

Do you know what I like about this other than its purpose? It shows young people of today that their parent's generation were well aware that smoking was harmful to their health, but decided to take it up regardless for the same reason as us: to look cool and fit in. Both my parents were smokers and my mum tried to use the age ol' excuse of, "…but we didn't know it was bad for you back then!" which made my dad and I laugh. Even in the 50s the general public were being informed that it causes lung cancer.
Anyway, it's been 2 & 1/2 weeks since I had a cigarette. I never knew quitting could be so much fun… If my kids ever ask why I took it up then I'll simply say, "we didn't know it was bad for you back then!".
