Fish oil is extracted fat from fish. It is the best source of a concentrated solution of omega-3 fatty acids. Leaves and seeds of perilla plants commonly found in North America are the richest plant sources of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). They are also found in Japan, China, Korea, Viet Nam and China.
ALA is contained in green plants, algae and linseed oil. But fats from fish are considered to be the more important sources of omega-3 fatty acids with the reason being that concentrated amounts of the ALA derivatives – EPA and DHA are found solely in fish.
A gram of fish oil capsule has roughly 180 mg of EPA and 120 mg of DHA – meaning three 1-gram capsules give 900 mg of EPA and DHA which is the recommended daily dosage by the American Heart Association. Note that these are food supplements and not drugs.
Studies reveal that more people are getting a large amount of the wrong types of fat – animal (saturated) fats and vegetables (polyunsaturated) fats. They need fish oil to "balance" these. The wrong fats bought to be lowered to total 20 to 30 percent of daily calorie serving while fats from oils of fish like salmon should be increased.
Oils from fish prevent and / or alleviate arthritis, heart disease, high blood pressure and migraine headaches. They protect from cancer, kidney disease and immune deficiency diseases. They also have two special nutrients that protect the heart and arms from inflammation and swelling, protect cell membranes and reduce pain. Omega-3 fatty acids found in oily fishes are known to be needed for the healthy development of the brain, retina, and nervous tissue in the foam and fungi.
During pregnancy these fatty acids are passed from the mother to the toeetus. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has strict guidelines relating to fish consumption during pregnancy because of the likelihood of ingesting mercury or other toxic substances. The best option is to take fish oil as a food supplement.
In the last three decades, over 7,000 scientific studies have shown the effectiveness of fish oil and omega-3 fatty acids in the prevention and treatment of common diseases. Hundreds of clinical trials also support the effectiveness of omega-3 essential fatty acids in the prevention, mitigation and remedying a huge range of health problems. In some scientific and medical communities however, many still resist these facts and favor pharmacological treatment.
Fish oil is a traditional food supplement which supports good health and it plays the role preventive medicine but as a natural substitute to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), other pharmacological and medical treatments, it is complementary medicine.
With the ongoing studies mainly providing its effectiveness, fish oil is on the verge of switching over to Western medicine.
