Get a Massage! – Quick Tip

Hi I’m Vi Wickam and I’m here for your [my] Talent Forge Quick Tip of the Week.

This week’s tip is one way we can take care of our body just a little bit better.

I don’t make recommendations that I don’t do myself. At least things that I try to do.

Now, this tip is something I have made use of for a long, long time. And it’s a tool called massage therapy.

When we play stringed instruments, and really anybody who plays any instrument, we are in shapes like this, or like this… that are not natural shapes.

Even though we try to be as ergonomic as possible, we try to maintain good shapes, it’s not perfect. We do the best we can.

On that note, Dr. David Wallace has a great series on comfort with your left hand and comfort with your right hand on [my] Talent Forge if you’re interested.

But this tip is just about taking care of yourself and the tools of massage therapy.

So because we abuse our bodies, by doing things that are unnatural shapes, we need to take extra good care of our bodies. And massage therapy is one of those ways we can do that.

And having a massage therapist work on everything from our legs on up to our shoulders, and our neck, can make a big difference. I can always feel a difference in my playing after I’ve had a massage therapy session.

Even when I go to a festival, if I have an opportunity to get a massage therapy session when I’m performing, it makes a big difference. It can help me to be able to play longer on stage without wearing out.

Something to consider- massage therapy is a great tool and can help keep your body in good shape when you’re abusing it by being a musician.

    Great tip! I've been wanting to get a massage to try and help out with some pain I've been getting (combo of work and playing, and nerve injury). Gotta do this soon.
