Hike in the Dark, Tips to Improve Improve Night Vision

Hike in the Dark, Tips to Improve Improve Night Vision

#Acne #HealingArts #HeartDisease #Heartburn

These tips will improve your ability to navigate in the dark, whether you plan to go on a night hike with the family or infiltrate a secret location with other ninjas. You will be able to look at a bright light or the full moon and immediately afterwards see the what’s happening in dark shadows on the ground. Before explaining the tips, I will describe the basic biology on how human vision works.

Light enters your eyes through the cornea. The lens then focuses it on the retina, a light-sensitive layer of tissue at the back of the inner eyeball. The retina acts like the film in a camera with the optic nerve sending the information to the brain. Cones provide color vision and require brighter light to function than rods which provide black and white vision under dim light. Rods can be stimulated by as little as one photon of light. Rods and cones are distributed differently across the retina, with cones concentrated in the center of the visual field and rods in the peripheral areas. The human retina contains about 120 million rod cells and 6 million cone cells. The number and ratio of rods to cones varies among species, with night-active animals having mostly rods. Rods contain the protein rhodopsin, which enables night vision. When exposed to bright light, rhodopsin immediately bleaches and night vision disappears. After bleaching, it takes 20 to 30 minutes to regenerate rhodopsin.

Ok, now for the tips:
1. Wear an eye patch, like a pirate.
2. Embrace the way of the Ninja. Stay low and view silhouettes.
3. Use your peripheral vision. Do not look directly at what you want to see.
4. Keep your eyes moving and blink frequently.
5. Use dim light (preferably red or green). Color choice is debated and sometimes considered a myth.
6. Wear sunglasses during the day. Sustained, bright sunlight can impair night vision for up to two days.
7. Avoid light blindness. Don’t be frozen stiff like deer in a car’s headlights.
8. Clean your glasses. Dirt or streaks will cause reflections that make it difficult to see.
9. Use all of yours senses to “see.” Learn the skills used by blind people.
10.Make lifestyle changes. Stop smoking and eat a well-balanced diet with plenty of veggies for vitamin A and zinc. (Check with your doctor.)

Practice makes perfect. Hike only in a safe environment after your eyes are fully dark adapted. Move slowly and with your arms outstretched and your head low to avoid obstacles (rocks, tree limbs, cliffs. ) No injuries please. Enjoy the black of night.

Poem: The Black of Night by Michael Carlson 1994, 2008

The black of night
Gives most people fright
But me
I feel free
In the black of night

In the black of night
Most people loose their sight
Because they cannot see
With out their precious light
In the black of night

Most people think the black of night is not right
But to me the black of night
Is one of the most grandest sights! !

Every day I wait and wait
Waiting to see that beautiful sight
Every day I wait and wait
For the black of night

Also, if I may add, wear good quality glasses with MULTI-COATED lens. This will greatly improve your ability to see at night if you wear prescription glasses.

Great tips, Ken! Especially the eye patch. So many times I'm in the dark hypnotically gazing into a fire only to discover myself blind when I want to look away for whatever reason. Gonna have to try that. Thanks.

Fabulous video .. Packed w information .. Even a Poem to "Night Sight "in your description.. Growing up in NYC , I frequently would not be able to adjust to daylight after spending 4 hours on Saturdays in a dark movie theater …never experienced a black out night until trying to walk down a country road on a moonless night … had to give up. Could 't see at all.

another amazing video ken, back in the day we were taught to immediately shut the shooting eye every time a paraflare went off at night. if not then it was bad news for the next 20 mins.
ive been on numerous camps with others and i tell everyone to go to red lights – unfortunately not all listen, including sandy lol.
eye patches may look a bit silly but hey – it doesn't matter as its a brilliant idea.
    take care my friend

Very informative Ken! love night hiking! The experience out in the woods at night without lights on is very enjoyable. It forces you to slow down and use the rest of your senses and with a bit of practice it will become your preferred way to hike at night. Wish I lived closer to you Ken cause I would love to do some night hikes with you.
