Whether it was watching my grandfather wither as his cancer progressed, transporting dying patients for EMS to hospice, and now a father who has become a part of a childhood cancer community with my son, I’ve seen more suffering than I could have ever imagined.
As I comb through the heartache of parents, I often come across a mention of the need for new treatments. I couldn’t agree more, and I also feel that another need is to make the most of the procedures we have until new therapies are developed. I believe we have complementary means and must ask better questions in conjunction with modern medicine. I do not think we will beat cancer with just surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.
Lander’s Corner is our way of bringing together foods, supplements, and products to help improve the quality of life for everyone. To help individuals take control with knowledge and resources. The importance of nutrition has become more and more evident.
Going back to Lander and the initial decisions we made around his diet are remarkably similar to the principle characteristics of blue zone communities. From there, I wanted to learn why and which components had the most significant impact. The two areas I focused on were Greece (Ikaria and Mount Athos) and Okinawa, Japan.
The reason I put so much faith into longevity is that there is a proven long-standing track record. Lifestyle is a huge factor, and the diet they have isn’t new, like so many fad diets. In my view, there is a lot of credibility here. I check any new information or recommendation I come across with longevity principles.
The Switch and Longevity Diet books lay out the importance of the combination of what and how how to live like these groups.
The second layer I focus on is gut micro and mycobiome(s). The topic is laid out remarkably by Dr. Mahmound Ghannoum in his book, Total Gut Balance. The gut microbiome is the totality of the organism making up the intestines. It is typically focused on the bacteria, while the mycobiome is the fungi. There are many different microbiomes inside and on the human body, but here we are focused on the gut.
Coincidently, or is it, the principles outlined by Dr. Ghannoum, mirror the natural way many of the Blue Zone natives eat. I am working on a microbiome specific article because the importance is incredible, and sharing this is proving to be pivotal in cancer treatments. The correlation between microbiomes, cancer, and chemotherapy is proven in very recent scientific studies, and we are are the leading edge of significant breath throughs.
The foundational level 1 is learning from longevity, level 2 optimizes the gut microbiome, and level 3 is dial in nutrition for both.
The nutrition experts at the core of our diet are Dr. Mark Hyman, Dr. Terry Wahls, and Biohacker Dave Asprey. Every book in this stack pictured is life-changing reads, and I highly recommend getting them.
Lander’s success, outside of medical care, in so many ways, is attributed to lifestyle and diet. I’ll keep learning and sharing to help others beat this disease with many faces.
