Fitness Tip: Tips to Grow Your Abs

We all know by now that lowering your body fat levels and having proper nutrition are key when it comes to having visible abs. But, what most people don’t realize is that you need to grow your abs in order to make them more visible. Below are some tips to help you grow your abs!

1️⃣ Choose the right exercises: Holding an inactive plank for an eternity won’t help you grow your abs. So, choose exercises that will like the ones shown in this video- stability ball crunch, cable crunch, reverse crunch, & hanging leg raises or hanging knee tucks.

2️⃣ Make sure you are using correct form during your ab exercises: If you don’t use proper form, other muscles, such as the hip flexors, will take over the movement, and your abs won’t grow. Focus on exhaling and pulling your belly button into your spine for each rep. If you are laying on the floor/bench, make sure to leave your low back pressed to the floor/bench throughout the entire movement. Choose weights that you can control with your abs, not weights that are too heavy and force you to swing and use momentum to get the weight up. When doing a movement like the reverse crunch, also focus on curling your pelvis under for each rep. Let us know if you need help perfecting your form!

3️⃣ Make sure you are using progressive overload in your ab training. Just like any other muscle group you train to grow, adding more weight with the same reps or more reps with the same weight overtime will build them up. In an exercise like hanging leg raises, you can straighten your legs out more to make it harder, or put a dumbbell between your feet. Using progressive overload for your ab exercises will build them up and make your abs more visible at higher body fat percentages.
