Intro to Nutrition #21: Tip #1: Don’t Grocery Shop When You’re Hungry

Never go grocery shopping when you’re hungry. Our bodies have appetite and weight-regulating hormonal mechanisms that try to maintain homeostasis.
You may recall that homeostasis is the body’s ability to maintain a stable and constant internal condition. When we consistently take in less energy than we expend, our bodies respond by making us hungrier. When you’re hungry, your body begins to secrete the hormone ghrelin which balances leptin. Ghrelin tells your brain that you’re hungry, whereas leptin tells your brain that you are satisfied and turns off hunger.
Ghrelin has also been shown to have a negative effect on decision making capabilities and impulse control. Impulse buying is a common behavior today. Our culture of consumption enables us to give in to temptation and purchase something without considering the consequences of the buy. Therefore, when you go to the grocery store when you’re hungry, the chances of you making unhealthy food purchases increase exponentially.
If you plan on going to the grocery store and you’re hungry, have a quick snack or cook something first and go do your grocery shopping after you have already eaten. Not only will you make better food choices, you’ll also save money by avoiding impulse purchases.
